Room accessories are the details that individualize your room, reveal your personality and put the finishing touches on room design. Accessories are fun to choose and are inexpensive ways to add interest. However, the number one mistake novices make is to over-accessorize a room, resulting in clutter. Here are a few tips to keep you on track.
Less is More
When redecorating a room, remove all the accessories and live with the room completely free from accessories—that means no pictures, no candles, no small sculptures, no pillows or throws. In this accessory void, the imagination is free to create. Begin returning things to the room slowly. Bring back only what adds to the room, leave the rest boxed away or take the items to a thrift shop or yard sale. Fight clutter at every turn.
Casual or Formal
Casual rooms require asymmetrical groupings of furniture and accessories. In other words, candles should be in groups of 3 or 5. In formal rooms, use symmetrical or even numbered groupings.
Family Photos
Whether you display your family photos on the wall or on a table or shelf, strive for continuity. One way to achieve continuity is to frame all the photos in frames of similar style and color. Another way is to choose only black and white or sepia tone photos for the room.
Because accessorizing a room is fun, easy and inexpensive, it’s easy to change the whole feel of a room by changing the accessories. So change it up from time to time. But, remember to continually fight against clutter.
