Paint is the easiest way to make a dramatic low cost change in your room. You will have a beautifully painted room that you can be proud of if you take some to time to prepare.
- Set Up a Paint Station. Use a table or a stable box covered with a small plastic drop cloth. Assemble and organize you paint brushes, rollers, tape, scissors, paint can opener, paint stirrers, plastic wrap, hammers, screwdrivers, and rags. One centralized place for everything keeps the paint job organized .
- Get the room ready. Move out as much furniture as possible. Use drop cloths to cover all furniture that cannot be moved. Cover the floors with a drop cloth. Take down all artwork and hardware. Remove electric plug plates and light switch plates.
- Get the wall ready. Wash the walls. Paint does not stick to dirt. If you are painting over gloss or semi-gloss paint, use a primer. Tape around the windows and doors.
- Prepare yourself. Wear a hat or scarf to keep paint out of your hair. Wear goggles or safety to glasses to keep paint out of your eyes. Take off watches and jewelry. Wear old disposable clothes—the ones that are comfortable but to shabby to wear out in public– are perfect. When you are finished painting, toss them out. Invest in a couple of pairs of cheap flip flops that you can slip on your feet when you leave the room you’re painting. This prevents inadvertently tracking paint into another room.
- Make a painting plan. Always paint the ceilings first, then trim around windows and doors, and finally paint the walls.
One of the key differences between a professional and an amateur paint job is the preparation a painter makes before opening the first can of paint. You know what to do, so get prepared and paint a masterpiece.
