Have you ever wished that your house would be selected for a home makeover? Or wished that one of those savvy t.v. designers that make interior decorating look like child’s play would show up on your doorstep and work for free? It could happen, but until then your best and least expensive alternative may be interior design software.

The good news is that there is wide range of interior design software to choose from.  Prices range  from $9.99 to $100.  Here’s what you should look for.

  • Ease of Use. Software should be easy to use.  If you need to read a multi-page instruction manual to get a basic room set-up, look at another software program.  Interior design software should not only be easy, but it should be fun.  You should be able to go from sophisticated to whacky in a few simple keystrokes.
  • Software should be upgradeable. You’ll want to upgrade often, so that you have the most choices of fabric, flooring, lighting fixtures, window treatments, etc.
  • Price. Don’t buy more software than you will need to get the job done.  If you starting a massive home interior redesign , go for the higher end software;  but if you are just re-designing a room at a time, use a less expensive software.  Some software is available online as a subscription, which is a nice option for a small project.  Subscribe as long as you need it and unsubscribe when you’re done.

Interior design software is like having a genie in a bottle or a professional designer in your pocket. The software allows you to move furniture around, change color palettes, try out window treatments and floor coverings.  It lets you play with ‘what if’ until you arrive at the magic ‘that’s it!’ moment.
