Small & Stylish Spaces

Small spaces can be a challenge to decorate. When furnishing a small space, such as a studio apartment, loft, or smaller-than-average room in your home, the goal is to create the illusion of a larger living space.

If you need to decorate a studio apartment, first think about how you will be using the space on a day-to-day basis. Will you want to entertain friends often? To make a studio space suitable for guests, consider dining tables with drop leaves. They can expand from seating two people, to seating four or six by lifting the leaves. Another tip for decorating in a studio apartment is to buy multi-purpose furniture. A daybed does double-duty as a sofa and sleeping space. When it comes to color, lighter colors will make a space feel bigger.

In a small room, use mirrors to create the illusion of a bigger space. For example, if you are decorating a small living room, place a large mirror on one wall and the reflection will trick the eye into thinking the room is bigger than it is. If possible, position the mirror opposite a window. When the curtains are open, the outdoor view will be reflected from the mirror, thus enlarging the space.

Eliminating clutter is a must when decorating a small space. Give away things you don’t need and when you want to purchase new items, think about whether or not you really need them. Use shelving, baskets and pieces such a storage ottomans to keep belongings organized and out-of-sight. The less clutter, the bigger your space will appear.

Natural light makes a room feel bigger, so keep curtains and blinds open during the day as much as possible. If you have the option of replacing carpet with wood flooring, the wood will reflect the light and makes a room feel more open.
